I also joined the group in DC and wow! What a rush! I did not attend the 2007 rally and have regreted it ever since, so when Aman asked me to join this time around I was 100% ready.
Highlights:
1) The training we received on Sunday was outstanding, the IV core group is very experienced in lobbying our Congress folks, but they need manpower! So we were all there to learn and prepare.
2) Meeting so many people in my same situation was enlightening and uplifting, you could feel the energy in the room and a hundred people getting ready to change the world!
3) Monday and Tuesday were incredibly hectic. I figured out how to navigate the House and Senate office buildings sort of by the end of the first day, once you see all the tunnels you start to get the hang of it.
4) We met with staffers from Congressional offices from the west coast mostly and some from the east coast. Some of the were clearly our allies, some others not so clear, although many pedged to support our provision even if they would not support CIR as a whole for example. This was very encouraging.
5) DC was a buzz with tlka of the November elections and how that will affect the agenda for 2011, luckily we were there to start shaping it!
6) Several staffers were aware of our issues (thanks to IV efforts), but they still don't know the subtle details like per-country quotas, AC21 interpretations and other issues that impact us. That's why we need to reach out in DC as well as our districts.
7) Highlights were meeting with White House staffers and an actual Senator, I was very impressed. The Sen. was aware of our issues (although some confusion with H1B) but the staffers were very aware. I feel we really touched a nerve and made her realize the gravity of the situation for many.
8) We met with the Microsoft government affairs people in DC and the outlook was bleak, they were in full damage-control around the Sanders-Grassley ammendment that would essentially throw out visa and GC holders from companies that had done or needed to do layoffs. WE NEED TO ADVOCATE FOR OURSELVES! WE CAN'T RELY ON CORPORATIONS TO DO IT FOR US!
9) The reception on Tuesday evening was a great opportunity to meet other lobbyists that are our allies and discuss next steps and serve a s a capstone for a job well done.
Great work on organizing this IV! We all need to support IV so that these events can keep happening and our cause can gain more visibility!

I don't think you have waited for 6 years after your PD to be able to file for EAD/AOS Benefits... the whole thing is messed up... There are people who filed during July Bulletin Fiasco and there are who could not even though their PDs are before yours. So do you ask them to SHUT UP ?
Everybody waited for a fair time before they got there EAD's. None of us got the EAD on day one. So don't try to mix all the issues into one.

I have been pained by many comments on the "Bulletin Update" threads earlier about IV misleading its members on the timing of the bulletin etc. How many of you go around telling that you have $100,000 in your bank account?

I know I will get red dots for this since you are super moderator, but again IV is a free speech based org, I am a Masters (advanced education) from a very prestigious US university with full scholarship with 4.0 GPA and in EB3 employment category. Eduation and EB catergory are two different things, one would think that would be clear by now.
it goes deeper than that. first let me point out that this is philosophical- you argument is not about law, it's about a point of view.
so if i ask you why EB2 filers should spend extra years getting educated and never getting this all important magic "PD" and then get in line behind someone who got a job the day they entered the country- and got a PD soon enough- what would you say?
ask me. it took me 11 years to get a PD. why? for 7 of those years i was getting my advanced education. so why should i suffer behind the 3 year Indian degree person (against my 7 years there as well) who came in 5 years after me and filed right away?
there are reasons why the EB priorities were set up. by simply extending your logic EB1 should also wait for a turn and not have priority. what's good for the goose....
having said that, it is absolutely insane to ask people to wait indefinitely and we must do something about it.
today the EB3 folks (and I have nothing against them, their waits are insane- and it's absolutely not right) are porting to EB2 with those bachelors degrees and 5 years experience. and just because they could APPLY for a GC earlier and all their years get counted in the PD, they keep lining up ahead of me. why do all my years count for NOTHING?
please spare us "fortunate" EB2s a thought too. think of when in life our careers are finally freed from waiting for a GC.
and now please concentrate on ways to end retrogression and stop the EB2 vs EB3 crap. we all have our problems.

Giving GC to STEM graduates is not the right way. If US needs to keep these educated people in US then US needs to make sure these educated people get an H1B without any issues and then they are on the path to GC like everyone else because H1B is a dual intenet visa. Jumping from a F1 visa to a GC visa is not correct as F1 visa is not a immigration intenet visa

I believe you can safely go to the cops and report this abuse. As someone has said above, immigration and civil matters are handled separately. You can (and probably) should get an advice from a lawyer about any implications to your GC journey here, just so that you are prepared for it. But letting this person go unchecked is not something you can afford.
Many corporations do not have enough resources to find out whether or not they are hiring legal employees. Even the republican candidates for presidency discussed this on stage in their debates that a person cannot check legal employability of everyone they hire. Many of us hire and pay incash for yard work, house maids etc. without checking if they are allowed to work in US. It's mainly the employee's responsibility to make sure they are allowed to legally work in US. That's why EVerify is voluntary and not a compulsion yet.

Hello everybody,
I'm a new member and i joined this forum today because i'm stuck in a knot. I am a Master's Student and i'll be graduating this May 2007. I have applied for my OPT which will start from 04 Jun 2007 and will end by 04june 2008. Now the next day after i sent my OPT forms to the immigration i read the news about the H1 general quota being filled already on the first day. I am really confused now.
Here is where i need your help, any prediction or idea when the Master's quota would be filled this year? Is there any way (website or something) that we can keep trck of the number of H1 application vacancies available in the Master's quota.?? Till what date so you think i should have a company file my H1 if i have to get into the MAster's quota this year?
These are the three questions that i seek the answers for...

Please stop using condescending remarks. I have been reading all your posts and your tone is going from bad to worst. It is not possible to place all the threads on the home page. We make a decision to put threads on the home page that we believe are important for our effort. If you feel otherwise, that is ok. But it is not ok for you to use derogatory language. If you feel so passionate, why don't you start your organization and spend your time, energy and resources and advocate for the cause instead of posting derogatory messages for others. It is very easy to fire when the gun is on someone else shoulder. We understand and share the frustration with green card delays, but that does not give you license to use derogatory language. Everyday there is new thread asking for update, leadership, direction etc. It is not practical to reply to every such post on this forum. None of us spend time on this cause to receive a Thank you note, however, posts like yours makes us wonder that are we a community of thankless educated immigrants who are so obsessed with our individual case that all that we want is instant gratification to exactly know the current status of our green cards, without which automatically IV is at fault. Just so that you know, people spend 30 sometimes 40 hours a week over the period of years, just to read a post from someone like you. We received a call at 12:30am yesterday from someone asking about changing to another company because his current employer was not being fair. So when you mock, please make it clear that you are not the one standing in the line of fire and you are not the one who wants to stand in the line of fire. You just wants to be the one to mock and ridicule. If you are serious about taking the baton, please let us know your phone number and we will post it on the website so that people can call you when they have a question. Lets talk about passing the baton, how about we start from posting your phone number on the website, lets see how you take that challenge. No one is paid to work on IV. People spend time on this effort out of their good-will and passion for the cause. So please be respectful towards others for their efforts. And please stop being a pain in the neck and talk some sense if you are serious about picking up the baton. Email us your phone number and you will see it on the website within an hour.
Now its time for you to go to all the forums of the world and say that IV Admin is rude and dictatorial or whatever.

Please stop using condescending remarks. I have been reading all your posts and your tone is going from bad to worst. It is not possible to place all the threads on the home page. We make a decision to put threads on the home page that we believe are important for our effort. If you feel otherwise, that is ok. But it is not ok for you to use derogatory language. If you feel so passionate, why don't you start your organization and spend your time, energy and resources and advocate for the cause instead of posting derogatory messages for others. What they are saying not jealous. According INA priority date in case substitution is the day I-140 is applied. Somehow the original labor date was assigned as priority date . This might be an error but is causing problems and Inconvenience and injustice to some innocent people. You can call it as jealousy. That is alright but they have an issue which they need to fight. However small number may be it can benefit these guys.

I'm not sure if I'm eligible to apply for Master's quota. I'm done with all my degree requirements and I've scheduled my thesis defence on MAy 20th. Is it still possible that I can apply in Master's quota. I've a letter from my schools which states that I'm done with all my degree requirements and I'll be finishing thesis on May 20th. Is this letter enough to apply for MAsters??
